Your blog and all of the comments that followed is dead nut and it
brings back a lot of bad memories (too many to mention). I don’t
normally share this but believe it or not years ago I actually went
through ministry school and served in organized religion for a short
period of time. If you think O.R. is bulls**t, try getting a back stage
pass to it. It will literally turn your stomach! I walked out and have
never turned back. For something that is supposed to be centered on a
God of unconditional love, it instead operates on a doctrine that
promotes the exact opposite inciting hatred, division, condemnation,
fear, you name it, and uses (and needs) all of those components to
insure a steady inflow of bucks. I refer to it as the “business of
religion”, and that’s all it is in the end. It has nothing to do with
God.
The guy that you met is rare but what I consider a true believer and
probably goes by this true biblical outline, “Love the Lord your God
with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself”. It’s real
simple but religion twists it to mean love your neighbor only if he or
she is a heterosexual, white, republican, upper class, non-smoking,
non-drinking, non-drugging, non-cursing, Little House on the Prairie
watching m*********ker! At that point you’re free to love them, invite
them to your church, and encourage them to bring their checkbook.
Anyone outside of that mold, write ‘em off as undesirable. Give me a
f**king break, which brings me to the point made that Jesus hung out
with a w***e…you guys left out thieves, drunks, murderers, and a whole
lot of other “non-religious” types. In fact my guess is if music were
around like today, he would have probably been found front row at a few
Motorhead concerts too (and having a blast).
